Last December, to our huge delight, we were visited at Shoe Center by Janet Lawrence Morris, a 1989 inductee into the Beach Shaggers National Hall of Fame, who we were happy to fit with some new shag shoes.
A young Jersey Shore girl, Janet Lawrence’s family relocated to Charlotte when she was around 12. She soon realized she was irresistibly attracted to watching the “fast dancers” rather than scope out the popular arcades and rides of Myrtle Beach in the summers. Being so shy, she remembers that her first dance partner was a doorknob. That was before a good high school friend took out onto the floor of the old pavilion in Myrtle Beach.
“Most people knew me from the early days of the late ’40s and early ’50s at Myrtle,” says Morris in a biography posted on the Beach Shaggers National Hall of Fame’s website. “I worked in Myrtle the summers of 1949 through 1951, and when I wasn’t working, I was always near the dance floor.”
School, marriage, motherhood, and relocations all came at her over the next 15 years, and it wasn’t until 1966 that Lawrence—now Janet Morris—returned to Charlotte with her husband and four children and “rediscovered her feet.”
“‘Fast dancing’ by then had somehow been renamed ‘the shag,’” she said, “but the music was there.”
On our Facebook page, on Dec. 16, 2015, we wrote, “It was great fun to work with Janet Morris on finding and fitting new shag shoes….[she’s] still dancing all through life. Big hugs and thank you to Janet for shopping SHOE CENTER!”
At Shoe Center, the beat goes on…and on! Come see us today at either of our Carolina stores and visit with us on Facebook. We’ll fit you with just the right shoe.
